The world loves Michael Jackson.
Shortly after the news spread about Jackson's passing, fans
gathered near the hospital in Los Angeles where he was pronounced
dead, dancing to his music.
Fans in every corner of the world honored the icons life. From France, Colombia, South Korea, to Ireland fans gathered to mourn and remember Jackson.
The renowned Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y. was bombarded with fans
who gathered, held hands and sang his music word-for-word, in
celebration of his life.Jackson first performed at the Apollo Theater with his
brothers in 1969.
To say Jackson was a superstar would be true, but a slightly
inadequate observation, for that is only a small fraction of who he
truly was. He changed lives, inspired listeners, opened the ears of
millions and opened our hearts just the same.
As devoted fans celebrated his life outside the Apollo, they signed a
mural filled with messages to the Pop icon, sold T-shirts bearing his
face and album covers and upheld signs for passersby to see.
Harlem resident and life-long Jackson fan Donna Donnor stood outside
of the Apollo theater for hours, two nights in a row, to show
appreciation for one of her favorite artists.
"I grew up with him," Donnor said. Many other fans will say the same.
For 45 years, Jackson entertained. Generation after generation, he
made us all dance - we all could relate. Through countries and
continents, we all moved to one beat.
"He was a genius; he was a legend," Donnor said. "He was an icon - all that."
Lower-Manhattan resident Laura DiGrande traveled up to Harlem to show
her appreciation, as well. She and her co-worker, Smita Pamar, created
one of the many signs to be posted onto the doors of the theater,
which is reportedly planning a tribute for the world-wide icon this
week.
"Despite all the controversies, his impact is profound," DiGrande
said, in reference to the legal woes Jackson faced in the last decade
surrounding child molestation charges.
Pamar said Jackson had a "global impact," with his music, his style
and his persona. She said he touched lives all over the world, citing
Africa and Saudi Arabia as just two of the many places he was loved.
As a longtime New York City resident, DiGrande also remembers the 9/11
tragedy, and compared that monumental day to the day following Michael
Jackson's death.
"I don't do this," DiGrande said. "I didn't go to the 9/11 site
[Ground Zero] for many years." However, she said she couldn't miss the
opportunity to celebrate Jackson's life and show her appreciation for
an artist she'd always loved.
Although it is a sad time, Pamar said it makes her "happy" to see so
many people celebrating and to see how much he was loved.
"There will never be another like him," DiGrande said. "He represents
something that will never happen again."
