Busboys and Poets, located on 14th Street NW, celebrated the 52nd birthday of pop star Michael Jackson on August 29 by having local poets, dancers, and Howard University students perform popular hits.
Ashton Travis, sophomore Music Business major, performed a poem titled "Ego" in Jackson's honor.
"It was a very special event," said Travis. "Even though it wasn't of great magnitude, just to be invited to perform at an event commemorating Michael Jackson is special."
Around the world, other fans of the famed but often scrutinized Jackson celebrated, including a Spike Lee-hosted event at the Nethermead Field at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Lee hosted the celebration to commemorate Jackson's 51st birthday last year, as well.
Since his death in late June 2009, Jackson has been celebrated by both African American and white leaders, and an event was held in his honor at the Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus last year. Jackson also won four posthumous American Music Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jeffery McCue, Ph.D, professor at the University of Maryland and attendee at the Busboys event, said "I'm pretty sure he has influenced everyone involved in the music business today. He wasn't just a musician, he was a humanitarian and he was able to touch so many people."
