It seems like just a couple of months ago, many were wondering if there was going to be an NFL season. Now, we are less than a week away from an unofficial national holiday, Super Bowl Sunday. This year in Super Bowl XLVI (46) we will see a rematch of Super Bowl XLII (42), a matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. Super Bowl XLII proved to be very entertaining, as the New England Patriots had been undefeated up to that point, lost to the New York Giants. The Giants provided one of the best plays in Super Bowl history, facing 3rd and five on their own 44 yard-line, quarterback Eli Manning escaped a sack from multiple Patriots defensive lineman and completed a 32-yard pass to wide receiver David Tyree, who pinned the football to his helmet to secure the catch. This led to a Giants touchdown and an eventual Super Bowl victory.
This year, like any other, the NFL had plenty of highlight plays and others that will hopefully be forgotten about sooner or later. Let's start with the positives. For a season where just before owners and players couldn't come to an agreement on how to split revenue, we had plenty of surprises following the lockout.
"Best moment that made the NFL exciting this season was Tim Tebow proving people wrong again and again," said senior physical therapy major Rob Huckabee.
Huckabee refers to the manner in which Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow, jumped on the scene this season. Before the season started, Tebow was the third string quarterback for the Denver Broncos, however after the team started only 1-4, Tebow got his shot. There were games in which Tebow played, all the right pieces necessary for the Broncos to win fell into place, and Tebow led this team to the playoffs, including a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wild Card Weekend.
On the other hand, there were instances that many teams, organizations, and fans would like to forget before the start of this offseason. When it came down to game winning field goals this season, we saw a lot of teams lose because of their inability to hit the game winner.
"Since field goals were prevalent this season definitely Billy Cundiff missing that field goal against the Patriots (AFC Divisional Round) and when Jason Garrett iced his own kicker," said Mecaela Holmes, a senior computer science major.
Within the hours and hours of NFL highlights this season the best play had to come from the Cincinnati Bengals. "Easily the best play I've seen in a while. Jerome Simpson performed a front flip over a Arizona Cardinal defensive back into the end zone for a touchdown, hands down the best this season," said senior psychology major Brandon Copeland. It was spectacular plays like that, that has people ready for a great rematch of Super Bowl XLII, on Sunday in Super Bowl XLVI.
