McKinley Tech High School is located in Northeast, D.C. The school is known for specializing in college preparatory and Science Technology Engineering Mathematics programs (STEM). However, senior, Jalen Stewart is a McKinley student that makes the school known for its athletics.

Stewart shows great athletic ability because he doubles as the star basketball  point guard and team captain, and he is starting pitcher for McKinley's baseball team.

Playing both sports, Stewart participates in vigorous workouts almost daily. And as his basketball season has come to an end, his baseball workouts begin.

The basketball team, whose record is 8-6, is performing well with seven players that have hopes of winning the Championship game coming up. The McKinley baseball team has been to either the playoffs or championships every year for the past three years.

"Some people think I play better in baseball and some people think I play better in basketball," Stewart said.  "I think I'm better at basketball though."

Despite his immense focus on basketball and the dedication, Stewart puts in his workouts, he manages to maintain a 3.8 GPA.

Stewart put in the necessary work and was able to raise his GPA in order to graduate. Some of his teammates unfortunately, became academically ineligible and unable to play for the rest of the season. In order to avoid that dilemma in his senior year, Stewart studies constantly.

Head Basketball and Baseball coach, Brian Crumpton triples as Stewart's teacher, basketball and baseball coach and he is also a Howard alum. Crumpton has known Stewart for nearly four years and has gotten to help him build his academic and athletic skills.

"Jalen is an outstanding student, character is outstanding, and he is a great student athlete," said Coach Crumpton . "He has a lot of potential and academically he's strong as well as athletically. Here at McKinley, we stress academics and I think Jalen has done a great job."

Stewart is hoping to get a collegiate basketball scholarship and hopes to one day make it to the NBA.

When Coach Crumpton was asked about Stewart going to the NBA, he said, "He's really banking on his basketball and you never take a dream from a kid, but if it doesn't happen he has to prepare himself. Baseball might be a way out for him."

Stewart has received offers from many Division II schools. He hopes to major in physical therapy and to use the skills he is learning at McKinley now and apply them to work towards his undergraduate degree.
