Northeast D.C. native, Dechara Hargrove, is a senior at Dunbar High School. She plays for the high school's volleyball that finished with a record of 6-6. Last year, the team had a rough season having a record of 0-14. Hargrove, who is a left-handed back row player, worked hard her senior year to get the team back in good standing making their way to the first round of the playoffs.
"It's of my favorite sports, I eat drink sleep and dream about [volleyball]," Hargrove said. "I'm going to miss the team, the support from the parents, and the coaches."
Even though the volleyball season is over, Hargrove doesn't limit herself to volleyball. Coach Latrice Nelson, who is Hargrove's volleyball and softball coach paints the athlete in a positive light.
"Dechara shows commitment. She's been with volleyball for two years and has played softball for three. This program was built from bottom up and she's been here from the beginning," says Nelson. Her coach follows the city's 2.0 GPA requirement for student athletes, but suggests her players maintain a 3.0 GPA. Hargrove maintains a 3.1.
"Some of the schools I've been looking at are Howard or Bowie, Xavier, Clark Atlanta, and DePaul. I hoped to get a volleyball scholarship, but now I pray I get a softball scholarship. I will probably play one of the two sports when I get to school," Hargrove said.
She started her softball career at third base then switched to the catcher position.
"I was the captain for softball and I would keep everyone energetic. I was the motivator," Hargrove said. "Most of our wins are by double digits, we had fun, we kept each other together, and we kept our attitudes in lock."
