After back-to-back losses at home the Howard University Men's basketball team is in an uncomfortable position with only nine games left in the season. The first loss came last Saturday when they played the North Carolina A & T Aggies.
The game ended with a final score of 70-65 due to the Bison's failing to make shots from the free throw line.
The Bison got off to another slow start, shooting just under 35 percent from the field in the first half. Despite poor shooting the Bison were still in the game due to the Aggies only scoring 37 percent of their attempts. The game went into halftime with the Bison being down six points.
In the second half the Bison opened with a run to cut the lead to four points with about 13 minutes remaining in the game. However the Aggies were able to maintain their lead by making 14 of 19 free throws in the second half. Howard was not as successful at the line making 11 free throws with a lot of those being the first of one-and-one attempts.
"You know we are still generally a young team," said new transfer senior guard, Glen Andrews. "We are still coming together as a team."
The Bison loss against the Aggies increased their losing streak to six games going in to Monday's home game against the Eagles of North Carolina Central University.
The Bison started the game with an 11-2 lead. However, the Eagles came back with a 11-2 run of their own as they took the lead at 13-11 with 10:22 left in the first half.
The Eagles finished the half with a 13-point lead due to the Bison making 28.6 percent of their shots. The Bison finished the game with a shooting percentage of 29.8 percent and couldn't gain the lead at any point in the second half.
The Eagles bench provided a significant lift in the game. Sophomore guard, Jeremy Ingram, totaled 27 points and 8 rebounds leading the Eagles bench, which outscored the Bison bench 43-15.
The next game for the bison is not until January 28th at Savannah State.
"We've got ten days to reevaluate this program," said head coach, Kevin Nickelberry. "The question is who's going to play, who wants to play, who wants to invest themselves in improving and who wants to invest into turning this thing around and winning basketball games."
The Bison using this break to pull together and try to finish the season strong. "We have to go out and have fun and enjoy the game we all love," said red-shirt junior guard, Calvin Thompson. "During the little break in between our next game, we just have to refocus on what's important and continue to improve on our games collectively."
