SEX: Saving Energy Extremely, was the second fashion sustainable fashion show produced by Amal Bennett-Judge, a senior political science major, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center Saturday night.

The show was also sponsored by the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative, and other Howard students, including Kendra Hill, a Howard alumna, who directed the show, and Jenn Nkiru, a second-year graduate student in the film department, who was the DJ at the event. Lisa Jackson, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, addressed the crowd at the opening of the show.

Built on the going green theme of VERDE, the sustainable fashion show also hosted by Bennett-Judge in 2009, SEX was a part of the Power Shift 2011 Conference, the largest national youth summit on climate change.

"People have this false ideology that the way you can be eco-friendly is not driving your car, but you can still be eco-friendly and fly…and it's through the clothing you wear," Bennett-Judge said.

Students from several HBCU's, including Morehouse, Hampton and Spelman, modeled the clothing, which was sponsored by Goodwill. Aveda provided eco-friendly hair and make-up.

"People don't realize the carbon footprint of their clothing because polyesters and nylons and Lycra and spandex are all made out of petroleum, which are things that cause climate change," Bennett-Judge said.
