" No! Death Row", "Hell No! We won't go", "No Justice, No Peace" and "I am…We are Troy Davis" are all things that could be heard in front of The White House on Wednesday, Sept. 21.. At approximately 3:00 p.m. Students and faculty were lead by members of the Howard University Student Association in a rally from the flagpole on the campus of Howard University to the front lawn of the White House on Capitol Hill.
Students were enthralled by the story of Troy Davis and the details of his case. Despite the lack of substantial evidence to convict Davis for the killing of Savannah police officer, Mark McPhail, Troy Davis was sentenced to death. On Tuesday, the Georgia Parole board denied Davis the right to clemency.
Despite the brief hours until his scheduled execution, students stood strong on their moral grounds. For many, Troy Davis symbolized a problem that needs to be fixed in America.
"The Justice system will be further subjected to corruption and the economy of those who are controlling it to make decisions, based off what they believe is right not based upon what the people of this country believe is right," Andrew Hairston, junior political science major, said. "All we are asking for is for the justice system to re-open the case and make sure that it is fairly injured before this man is put death."
