Yesterday, Howard University said goodbye to "The Florida Highwaymen- The Road to Freedom" exhibit in the Blackburn Gallery. The Highwaymen were a group of 26 African Americans who painted landscapes. The paintings, which originated in the 1950's, were shunned by art galleries because of racism, poverty, and brutality. They sold their artwork from the trunks of their cars along highways. During the reception, Tony Hayton said, "I feel the Howard University community really enjoyed the exhibition. I am sad to see it go."
