Thursday, Nov. 3, author Natalie Jobity held a book signing and book reading at the Howard University bookstore for her book Frumpy to Fabulous Flaunting It: Your Ultimate Guide to Effortless Style, The Revised Edition.
The book serves as a "how to" guide for women as it relates to style, fashion, looks and confidence. It opens with a quote from Marianne Williamson, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous."
"That quote just belonged," Jobity said, "It speaks to everything that I was trying to say with my book."
The revised edition of Frumpy to Fabulous is more illustrated and includes more personal information about the author. Her goal is to show readers that, despite being the "expert," she's just like them. Jobity describes the introduction in the original book as being shortchanged and said, "I wanted to share my journey, I wanted people to know where I came from and what I am made out of."
The revised edition also includes a chapter on business casual wear. Knowing what to wear to work o casual Fridays or knowing what business casual is can be confusing, and people usually get it wrong. Jobity paints a detailed picture and includes actual pictures of what business casual is and how it should be worn.
Frumpy to Fabulous Flaunting It: Your Ultimate Guide to Effortless Style was originally targeted at adult women ages 21 and older. The book, however, has been passed down and gifted to many teenagers. "I feel like the message in the book can be for anyone who is mature enough to handle the information given and be served by it," Jobity said.
Jobity, president of Elan Image Management, works as an image consultant in the D.C. area where she works with women to help them define and project their unique signature style. Jobity started off as a market researcher and was also vice president of research at a company in New York where she helped them understand their brand. However, Jobity wanted more; she wanted to be in a field where she could do more with her skills. As a result, and because of her love for colors, she began to look into the interior design which led her to image consulting.
Since she was a little girl, Jobity wanted to write a book. She didn't know what to write about but knew that she wanted to be an author. With Frumpy to Fabulous, she's able to reach a wide range of women, especially those that aren't able to access her directly. Her main goal is to promote self empowerment, awareness and expression to women everywhere. She wants to empower women to be the best that they can possibly be.
Frumpy to Fabulous Flaunting It: Your Ultimate Guide to Effortless Style is one aspect of Jobity's mission of 1 Million Makeovers: Change Your Image, Transform Your Life, which seeks to transform women's lives and help them to reach their fabulous self. Jobity issues tips that help them refine, tweak or revamp their image.
"In order to have confidence you have to flaunt it. Flaunt is an attitude, and you can't flaunt what you don't feel," Jobity said.
Jobity leaves the women of Howard University with five essential pieces of advice:
