Over this past summer, Issa Rae, introduced the world to a new type of black woman known as the "Awkward Black Girl" when she created the "Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl". She gave viewers another way to look at black women and allowed them to see from a new perspective, a perspective that has yet to be seen in programs on B.E.T or VH1.
She reached out to those women who could not relate to the lifestyle of the "Basketball Wives", or even the women in shows such as "The Hills". Awkward Black Girl, (ABG), is a comedic web series that touches on the awkward feelings and thoughts that everyday people have, but are often afraid to express, such as interracial dating or the uneasy feeling of standing alone at a party. Jay, the main character, who is played by Issa Rae, is your average Black girl, which is what makes the show so great. She is not trying to be a "glamour girl" or a video vixen, she just wants to be herself; a lot of people, both men and women, can respect that.
When asked how she could relate to Jay, senior Natasha Holmes said, "her friends and the situations that Jay finds herself in are the things she could relate to the most".
If you have not had the chance to catch Jay and her adventures, the "Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl" can be found on YouTube or the show's official website. So far, there are seven episodes and the season finale, which is the eighth and final episode of the season, airs tomorrow night.
The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl College Tour will be giving colleges the chance to bring (ABG) to their campus, in a panel discussion with creator and star of the series Issa Rae and the producer Tracy Oliver aka Nina. Although the show is not scheduled to come to Howard University, if enough students petition, it may be possible.
"We'd love to come to Howard and I hope we can come out there," Rae said.
ABG College tour information can be found here.
