The General Assembly proclaimed 2011 as the International Year for People of
African Descent, with a vision to strengthen national actions, regional and international
cooperation for the benefit of people of African descent in relation to their participation
and integration in all aspects of society.
The Department of World Languages and Cultures of Howard University presents an
International Conference: "Africa and People of African Descent: Issues and Actions
to (Re)-envision the Future." Open to scholars, journalists, writers, youth community
leaders, NGOs, artists and playwrights, its purpose is to promote a greater knowledge
and respect for the diverse African heritage and culture of people of African descent;
to expose the struggle for recognition of their African memories (history, literature, art,
music, dance, cuisine, religion, etc.) and their participation in political, economic, social
and cultural aspects of their respective nations.
The interdisciplinary International Conference will also attempt to address the
national resistance or national silence opposed to the struggle of marginalized people of
Africa and African descent for their rights of land and for their civil/human, political,
social, economical rights, etc. Moreover, one of the critical objectives of the conference
is to make possible both the connection between Africa and the African Diaspora in
Europe and the Americas (Latin America and, eventually, Canada and the USA) and to
identify actions to re-envision their future.
The event will be held in the Fine Arts Gallery Thursday, Sept. 15 from 9am-4pm and
Friday from 9am-5pm.
