When the dust settled on the 2005 student elections at Howard, Byron Stewart and April Harley, Asso Aidoo and Selano Simmons were named the victors in major campaign races: HUSA president, vice president, undergraduate trustee and graduate trustee, respectively.
Since early 2003, the Howard Office of University Communications has been developing new logos, standard graphic policies and their process recently ended with adding the Founder's Library clock tower to the university logo. The two-year development process consisted of focus groups composed of university alumni and recent graduates in Washington, New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
Amid complaints and outrage about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's "wardrobe malfunction" at last year's SuperBowl Halftime Show, networks have tried to be on their p's and q's about what they broadcast, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been enforcing penalties more seriously.
In an attempt to deter violence in the hip-hop culture, the Rev. Al Sharpton proposed last Thursday that a ban be placed on music by artists whose lyrics depict violent acts. Sharpton did not specifically name any artists, but told the Associated Press that a shooting linked to a feud between rapper 50 Cent and The Game highlights the need for a ban.
The first week for most freshmen is usually spent getting familiar with the campus and registering for classes. However, for freshmen Vince Hill, Jason Russell and Jason Victor, their first week at Howard last August involved an instant bond for music. After meeting during a freestyle cipher in Drew Hall, the two rappers started to freestyle to Hill's beats.
Incense Sparks Blaze at Rust College Nearly 160 freshman girls fled their dorm at Rust College to escape a fire on March 15 that failed to set off alarms. Students ran through the halls during the 3:45 a.m. blaze, yelling and banging on doors to wake neighbors and escape.
On a damp and dreary Easter Sunday Rev. Dr. Gardner C. Taylor delivered the chapel service sermon driving home the message that undoubtedly Christ lives and because of his resurrection human beings can find meaning in their lives. Speaking to an audience that nearly filled Cramton Auditorium to capacity, and included University Trustee Vernon Jordan, Taylor began his address by talking about how he was honored to be invited to Howard.
