STEP SHOW

Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Inc., a predominantly Caucasian sorority, took the grand prize at the Sprite Step Off in Atlanta last weekend. The Step Off included several other Greek organizations, including the Divine Nine.

An all-white step team representing the international women’s fraternity of Zeta Tau Alpha defeated their Divine 9 competition to claim first place and a grand prize of $100,000 at the first annual Sprite Step Off event.

It was nearly 12:30 in the morning when the winner was declared, and the capacity crowd of more than 4,500 had dwindled to half that number, exhausted from having yelled and hooted at an event that started around 6:30 pm.

The Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) team, clad in black trench coats, shades, and knee-high platform boots had come out and stunned the crowd with awe-inspiring steps, rhythm, precision, and intensity. Portraying a “matrix” theme, the Zetas masterfully executed a routine filled with one-legged steps, a hip-hop dance routine, crowd-pleasing chants, and even a step atop tables held shoulder high to take first place.

Shaunte Russell, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (one of the members of the “Divine 9”), from Xenia, Ohio who came to support the eventually winning male step team from Central State University, was thoroughly impressed by the Zetas.

"I thought it was pretty amazing that the Sprite Step Off had a white step team, and that they performed so well."

Not familiar with stepping, the Zeta’s were first introduced to the art of stepping 15 years ago by a local AKA chapter through a series of joint community service events done at the University of Arkansas.

“This started off as pure philanthropy” Kristin Kosmitis, a member of the Zeta step team admitted. "We're just amazed to be here. We were told we wouldn't make it out the first round, and now we're here getting a standing ovation."

A white sorority winning the largest step show in the world sent shockwaves through those who stayed to hear results. Soon, the crowd whom just hours before had applauded the Zeta’s, began to boo the victory.

"Sprite manipulated the crowd,” said Howard sophomore sports medicine major Oyetewa Oyerinde. “I thought the Zetas were more of a showcase, I thought this was a Divine Nine event."

Oyerinde, like many others, cheered enthusiastically for the Zeta team not knowing that she was propelling them to victory.

Crowd participation was a major category in the judging and proved to be one of the main factors in the Zeta triumph.

“We’re hypocrites,” said senior political science and philosophy double major Joshua Tabborn. "The crowd gave them a standing ovation when they stepped, and booed when they won. Everyone's stuck in the old way of stepping - including only the Divine 9. And because ‘the white people’ won, we're mad at ourselves."

One of the organizers of the trip, former HUSA president, and current Howard law student Marcus Ware, supported the Zeta’s win.

"I think Zeta Tau Alpha and the Tau chapter AKA's were evenly matched, but the crowd went more so with the Zetas and crowd participation matters. So the results make sense," he said.

Howard University fielded teams in both male and female contests. Both however, returned home empty handed.

"I feel like we should have placed," said a visibly angry Jeremy Williams, junior biology major and member of the Howard Xi Chapter step team.

“The ballots were extremely close, but in the end I think the crowd actually won the show for the Zetas,” said an MTV representative who was working backstage.

The Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated out of Indiana University and the Clark Atlanta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated placed second and third respectively.

The Central State University chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated won the male grand-prize and $100,000. Clark Atlanta University’s Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and Rutgers University’s chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated were awarded second and third place respectively.

So much hate toward white people and all others too. And yes, it is hate. This "its ours and not yours" mentality, isn't racism, it is supremacy. Meaning you think you are supreme to all races.
Not fair.

How can scores of apolitical and ahistorical so-called Blacks get so upset over the outcome for "Steppin and Fetchin"(see entertainment history for further explanation) contest not even more outrage over the following: 1) the Punk President Obama reauthorizing the US PATRIOT ACT; 2) the flawed Healthcare policy by the Democrats; 3) How the Punk President Obama insulted the HBCUs by providing a meager $98 million dollars for the the 105 HBCUs to divided amongst one another; 4) Movies called "Precious" or "The Blind Side" which perpetuates negative stereotypes about the Black community; 5) How these so-called Black organizations such as the NAACP, the National Urban League, and the Congressional Black Carcus(Caucus) have been complicit with the Punk President and his domestic and foreign policies even though such policies harm the Black community; or 6) The continued nationwide police brutality (i.e., Oakland, NYC, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, or Chicago, etc.)Black men experience everyday in this country. In other words, quite expending time worrying about insignificant affairs and focus your attention on real substantive issues impacting our Black community if we expect to survive.

Basketball was invented by a White man and first played by White players.

Why did the Blacks 'steal' basketball from the Whites?

Give me an effin' break... step up yo' game if you don't want the white folks winning. Quit cryin about it and bring it next time. Whoever steps the best should win. They brought it... and now they've given the AKA's a tie? It wasn't even close. Just cuz it's always been "ours" doesn't mean that we don't have to still go out and bring it. Grow up people.

The most hypocritical thing about all of this is blacks have fought so hard for their own advancements socially, professionally, and culturally. NOW their culture is passed on to whites, to a point where they excel and win a competition, and now they're mad? They should be happy other races and cultures are inspired like this and hope it continues to grow. Get over yourselves.

to "what did u expect" stfu. what do you mean MTV and Sprite should stay away from "OUR" events. it was THEIR money THIER show. so "WE" need to either go hard....or go home...and so now that we r all home in our safe little all black communities...we can all shut up and move on...

Instead of getting upset with the results of the "fair competition," those attending those HBCUs should be even more upset with the overall conditionality of your schools. In fact, I've visited several HBCUs and based upon what I've seen, one would be so inclined to say that it's reminiscent of the mid 20th century. For example, each one of these HBCUs, the "fricking campus" wasn't even wireless(you know, where you can access the internet from your laptop anywhere on campus), or the elevators weren't working in building, etc. So, until your HBCUs get up to par with what a real educational institution "should be", you certainly should be upset with a few All American White sorority girls surpassed you in what you say is "ours."

Re: Anonymous:

Maybe I'm just an intellectually savy White guy, but I do not recall and Black fraternity or sorority having any sort of patent trademark on any "dance moves" in any capacity. Therefore, such "dance moves" are available to all of those who want to expend as much time and energy in mastering them to the point they actually perform them "better" than the creator themselves. Case in point, renowned Jazz artist Kenny G easily states where he learned how to play jazz and who he studied or patterned himself after. So, this only mean that those from these Black fraternities and sororities must practice more if they expect to win next year. By the way, Whites can make the claim that Barack Obama should not allowed to be the president because my "Founding Father's" would disapprove.

@ the anonymous poster that called folks "Dolts" for using the term "reverse racism": Dude, you need to calm down. I used the phrase "reverse racism" as a phrase/slang to refer to discrimination against the dominant or majority group, which in America are whites. Try googling "reverse racism" and see that is is actually in several online dictionaries and encyclopedias. Of course, "racism" is racism regardless if towards a minority or majority group. However, I used the phrase earlier to emphasize that racism is not only against a minority group. So please stop name-calling when you don't have your facts straight.

Taking what is rightfully "yours"? That's such a racist remark. America is a melting pot of cultures and beliefs and there is no such thing as "yours" or "ours".

How would you feel if you were told that blacks should not sing rock or country music , nor play basketball/football because that was started by whites. Also, heck throw in martial arts because that belongs to asians. sound stupid? Yep, as dumb as your remark that "stepping" should only remain a black thing.

I would like to say thank you Blacks for showing me how to sing, dance, and step. Now I can appear "cool" to my larger White community and make lots of money doing 'Top Tier' commercials, a possible Broadway show, or even a movie. So, keep up the good work!!

This shows how ignorant are these "so-called" Black Greeks are by showing these far removed White girls how to do the Al Jolson Stepin and Fetchin dance. If these "so-called "Black Greeks were familiar with entertainment history they would have know that Whites have always been able financially capitalize off the talents of Blacks after Blacks showed them how to dance, sing, and dress. Will we ever learn? I challenge all of these "so-called" Black Greeks to tell me the "Start point and the End point" of the Underground Railroad.

Insha Allah!

I was at the show. ZTA did great!!!!, but they should not have won. A close second, yes to be fair. It wasn't reverse racism, but the novelty of being a white step that pushed them to win. Ever seen white singer at the Apollo on TV? same novelty principal. ZTA did great, but not first place. An honest assessment.
