The weather has had ups and downs this winter, going between warm days and frigid nights. When the temperatures have dropped to bone chilling there's nothing like a cozy winter coat to block the chill. Fashion offers an array of coat styles in different textures, lengths and colors. This season minimalism, fur and bright colors have been prevalent amongst the styles, so choosing the right one, or two, comes down to an individual's taste.

Minimalism– This has been a big trend amongst the fashion world the past few seasons and this winter it did not change. Coats in colors such as black, white, charcoal, camel, and cream are popular for a more sophisticated and conservative look with designers like Derek Lam and Max Azria. Plus, these colors can be found in every shape and cut from pea coats to trenches, which Burberry offers plenty.

Bright Colors- On the other end of the spectrum, bright colors have also made a huge statement in recent seasons and what better way to brighten up a brisk, winter day, than with popsicle-colored outerwear. Any color of the rainbow will work as long as it's bright. Celine provided a fresh example with their tangerine oversized pea coat from fall 2011.

Fur Coats- A trend for the cold and bold, fur is a show-stopping coat for those sophisticated evenings out or to turn a simple look into a luxurious outfit. Try either a bold animal printed fur or opt for a rich, chestnut fur from fast-fashion stores like, Mango and pair it with a long, elegant dress for a lavish look. This coat is generally reserved for the ladies, but even some bold men in European countries have been sporting long furs this season.

Shearling - If there is one jacket to get, it's this one. Its classic style is emphasized by its warm, fuzzy, comfortable and versatile aesthetic. A leather or suede shearling coat can never be wrong and it's great for class, traveling or just hanging out.

Two-toned- Color-blocking has come and coats have received their share of the trend. Two-toned jackets with sleeves of contrasting colors are trendy this year and when the sleeves are leather, it makes the look that much better. Neutral colors like black and grey are good choices for this style as they give it a more timeless feel.

Leather- A good leather can go a long way and is not going out of style anytime soon. If there is no quality leather hanging in that closet, now is a great excuse to shop and pick the one that belongs there. A premium, 100% leather jacket is the only way to go when buying one so prepare to shell out some extra cash for a style that will last forever. Find the right leather jacket in virtually any store but take the time to look and choose, as this is not a regular purchase, but an investment.
