At the intersection of 3rd and Elm Streets, what is now an empty lot will soon become a park the entire community can enjoy. On the morning of Wednesday September 1, Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. council members and local residents gathered for a ground-breaking ceremony in LeDroit Park where the Gage-Eckington Elementary School once stood.
The Gage-Eckington Park construction project was placed on hold by D.C. council member Marion Barry in July 2010 after a disapproval resolution was placed on it. The resolution expired without further action on Aug. 26. A contract was developed this Monday.
Director of Howard University Community Relations, Maybelle Bennett, is excited to see this plan put in motion.
"I'm grateful that this park has moved past the development stage," said Bennett. "I think our students should be happy as well. It will be favorable addition to the community."
Keystone Plus Construction, a D.C. minority based construction company, plans to begin construction within the next two weeks.
"I'm excited about getting started on this project," said Randy Carroll, a representative of Keystone Plus Construction. "I live in southeast and we don't have a park that's going to look like this."
