The Howard University student leaders who organized Friday's protest have refused an offer to meet on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with President Sidney A. Ribeau.

According to Howard University Student Association (HUSA) President Bryan Smart, the reason for the cancellation was transparency. He said meetings no longer need to take place in the confines of the boardroom, but a public dialogue needs to take place.
In his opinion, an open dialogue will promote consistency of promises and accountability.
Until Ribeau addresses the issues, student leaders will not be meeting and will continue to wait.

Also left waiting was Ribeau, Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer Alvin Thornton and three other administrators who expected to meet with the students on Tuesday.

According to Ribeau, they arrived at the Board of Trustees boardroom, where the meeting was to be held in the administration building, at 11:30 a.m. as negotiated the day of the protest, but no one came.

"I got no notification that it was cancelled," Ribeau said. "They just didn't show up. We were sitting here waiting."

According to Associate Provost Barbara Griffin, the meeting was to be held to address the concerns of the students since Ribeau was not in town the day of the protest. On Friday, Sept. 4, she said the president was open to the students' concerns and that HUSA did request the meeting.

HUSA Vice President Jerome Joseph said an e-mail was sent to Ribeau about the cancellation of the meeting. Along with that e-mail, student leaders have asked students to e-mail Ribeau,  beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, about issues they were having at the university.
Smart said phone calls were made to no avail.

This was a dumb move, and the funny thing is that HUSA actually thing this was the perfect strategy. Be professional and send the President of HUSA and meet with President Ribeau. All of the strikes were fine your voice was heard, now become an adult and get to business.

I like the fact that the HUSA is stepping up. But we all must realize that this isn't the fault of President Ribeau, and that the finger must be pointed at the real culprit is Swygert. I just feel sorry for the guy because he was dropped with a load of mess from his predecssor.

Interesting Move, HUSA painted themselves into a corner they will have an extremely hard time getting out of. The lack of consideration and flexibility to meeting have put them at an extreme disadvantage. Surely they could have met the president and had one of their (HUSA) representatives take meeting minutes that could have been posted in the subsequent editions of the Hiltop.
If HUSA ensists on an open forum the president can easily counter with restricting who can attend this "public forum, as well as time and location of the said public forum. What they wont allow this to turn into is a public spectacle with raging emotions without the benefit of any intellect, that would be counterproductive. It is very difficult to dialogue when you have people being rude, with sneers and jeers in the audience.
In short HUSA dropped the ball on this one and should have kept the meeting as scheduled. If deemed necessary followed up with a "town hall" style meeting with just the students to discuss what was said in the meeting, then asked for the president to attend to a future meeting.
As I said earlier you have to crawl before you walk !
Interesting move

I like the move to change the terms of the meeting. The meeting should be public so that there is a public record of the conversation. The comparisons to the earlier protests are unfair when they are not contextualized properly. This protest has potential to manifest a student activist movement. Please do keep up the good work.

HUSA changed the terms of the original meeting without ensuring that the man was notified. More than transparency (or lack thereof) students want to go back to school. Meet with the man and move forward. No time for gamesmanship.

This was really irresponsible of HUSA. If there was no confirmation of the receipt of the email, and HUSA was not able to reach anyone by phone, then someone should have personally went The Office of the President and canceled. Very unprofessional!

Come on students let's work together and move on. Meet with thePresident and follow up with everything in writing and report to the student body. Honestly what was gained by being disrespectful ?

Mr. Jackson what these students have shown us is they do not have the patience and perserverance to see their mission through. An invitation was extended to them by the President they claimed in all of their protests doesnt listen or care. Then when after the door is open to discuss the matter they not only reject it but demand a public forum.
Stop making excuses for their lack of maturity. Seems to me they want the liberty to act and speak as "grown folk" but when necessary resort back to sophomoric type behavior. In standing up the President they have all but exclaimed things are fine as is so the status quo will work. Credibility is all but gone.

Do we not understand that these students join HUSA to learn to become leaders. Stop the hating. These students need our support not our condemnation. Wake up Bisons. We are one and must come together for the greater good of our College. These young people are taking steps to improve our school and you have the nerve to write these comments. What are you doing to help. I do not believe the card game is over. I believe they only just begun. Ignore the haters and keep on with your defiance of unsound practice. I TAKE THESE STUDENTS VERY SERIOUSLY. They want better.

What? You can not ask for a meeting and then stand the guy up. HUSA needs to realize you have wasted students as well as administrators time. NO ONE WILL TAKE YOU SERIOUS NOW. You should have met with the administrators negotiated your demands then requested to have a forum as the final demand. If you had played your cards correctly you probably would have found some success with your protest.

HUSA you have shown a poor example of student leadership at the Capstone.

I am disappointed that the students did not meet with the President. They wanted to start a dialogue and did not step up when the opportunity was given. To be a Leader its more that organizing a protest it is also about sitting down face to face with the opposition to discuss, develop, and execute the best plan to move forward.

HUSA step up!!!

What a waste of a protest.
Now these kids want to dictate the terms on which to discuss the changes they want to see made. Unreal.
Lack of maturity at play. You have to crawl before you walk.
