The Howard football team started with their first game of the season by traveling to Worcester, Massachusetts where they faced No. 25 Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 4.

Holy Cross struck quickly as they scored within the first five minutes of the first quarter when senior quarterback Ryan Taggert threw an 11-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Luke Chmielinski. After a Howard turnover in the second quarter, Taggart later threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Bill Edger who entered the game with a reception in the last 20 games.

Howard's chances were shot at half time, as they were down 14-0.

The third quarter saw the 14-0 deficit increase to 24-0, after a 29-yard field goal by senior kicker Rob Dornfried. Taggart also connected with Edger for a 38-yard touchdown, his second touch score of the game.

Although the deficit was large, a moment of hope came in the third quarter on Howard's only scoring drive of the game.Quarterback Jarad Dorsey threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Willie Carter.

The fourth quarter did not see much improvement as the Crusaders scored twice more, the first on a 10-yard trot by sophomore running back Sam Auffant and then an 85-yard punt return by senior wide receiver Freddie Santana.

Wide Receiver Willie Carter was Howard's only bright spot on offense as he tallied six catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Red-Shirt senior Lanny Kelly led the defense with five tackles and a break up in the passing game.

Stay tuned for the biggest game of this season this Saturday, Sept. 11, as Howard (0-1) faces Hampton (0-1) for the first home game of the season at Greene Stadium.
