New York City wasn't the only place to find streets buzzing with live music and celebrities shopping in designer stores open late on Friday, Sept. 10 when Georgetown participated as an official region of Fashion's Night Out.

Georgetown was selected along with other renowned fashion destinations like London, Rodeo Drive, and New York City to host this global initiative created to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry's economy, and put the fun back in shopping. Over 80 stores restaurants and salons participated in the event with extended hours and specials.

"The whole point is to celebrate fall fashion while dressing up, having fun, and helping charities at the same time," said Jannah Shamsud-din, a 22 year old volunteer from Labels for Love. Shamsud-din and other volunteers worked the Vitamin Water lounge table and sold $10 signature Georgetown DC eco-friendly tote bag s. All of the proceeds from the purchased bags are going to Labels for Love, a charity committed to raising funds and awareness for women's and children's organizations in the DC area.

The vitamin water lounge was one of the many attraction spots of Fashion's Night Out. A line of people waited in line at the lounge to take pictures in the Vitamin water photo booth, purchase their Labels for Love tote bags, and receive their free Vitamin Water.

Georgetown's Cupcakes, BCBG, Diesel and other stores and restaurants gave out free gifts during fashion's Night out. Other places like Betsey Johnson had VIP parties with cocktails and wine tastings that only allowed paying customers to enter.

Most of Fashion Night's Out events were visible without VIP passes. One store, Annie Creamcheese Vintage Boutique had a break dancer in their store window to help promote the night.

"DC has a large art community so I think this event is good for Georgetown to have," said Sophia Guerci, an employee at Annie Creamcheese and a fashion photography major at Corcoran Arts School in Washington, DC. "This gives small boutiques a good opportunity to gain exposure," said Guerci.

Students also participated in the Georgetown event. A group of students that attend American University were dressed in heels giggling excitedly at the Vitamin Water Lounge after meeting one of the Real House Wives of DC at Fashion's Night Out.

"It's really amazing to see Georgetown come alive like this," said Paula Tulis a sophomore Communications major at American University. "It's exciting especially for college students, I feel like we have an opportunity to show the world our style."

One Howard University student that attended the event, Kelsey Kreamer, a junior marketing major says she was disappointed that she didn't see more Howard students at the event. "Sometimes I think we forget that we go to school in the nation's capitol and that there s more going on outside of our campus," said Kreamer.

The Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the accessibility, attractiveness and overall appeal of Georgetown. Representatives say they plan to participate in the event again next year.
