The United Nations (UN) and World Food Programme (WFP) have launched a program to help battle hunger. There are one billion people facing starvation worldwide. The program is called “Billion for a Billion”. Their goal is to have one billion people donate one dollar or euro.
Ban Ki-moom, the secretary general of the United Nations is planning to fast for 24 hours to show solidarity with those who do not have enough to eat.
According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, starvation is a severe reduction in vitamin, nutrient and energy intake. In 2008, according to the UN, there were 900 million people facing starvation.
Starvation and malnutrition is a worldwide problem and even exists in our own backyards. Many of us have seen people who are starving on the streets of Washington, D.C. or our respective home towns. Starvation is an unfortunate reality for too many people across the globe. As future leaders of the black community and the globe at large, it is our responsibility to step up to the plate and help out those that are less fortunate than ourselves.
Before you stuff your face and overeat at Thanksgiving dinner or Chipotle, take time to think about those who are less fortunate and go days without eating. Volunteer at a food bank or donate money to an organization whose mission is to help those in need. A little bit of money can go a long way in lending a helping hand.
As Americans we tend take a lot for granted. According to library.thinkquest.org, every year 15 million children die of hunger.
According to estimates by the World Health Organization, which was established by the UN in 1948, a third of the world is under-fed and another third is starving.
As of today the WFP has raised $2.9 billion from donations. They are still shy of their goal of $6.7 billion.
The WFP has created ways to donate and raise money on popular social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.
