In an episode of "Seinfeld," Jerry wore boxers, George wore briefs and Kramer gave up Jockey briefs after being told about the sperm count legend. He later went commando after he couldn't adjust to boxers.
At the 1992 MTV Rock the vote special, a young lady posed this question to former President Bill Clinton who replied, "Usually briefs." Her question started a buzz from the lunch room to the board room; from congressional offices to the streets, people were talking. Years later, the question can still spark debate among men and women. What is the fascination with men's underwear, and does it even matter?
Some men are concerned that briefs may lower the sperm count in the testicles and lead to infertility. A study done by doctors from State University of New York at Stony Brook showed that underwear type didn't affect semen quality or scrotal temperature, and did not affect fertility. Fears about fertility aside, do men even care one way or the other?
A survey done by Cotton Inc. poll showed that men's preference was related to age. Preference for briefs is strongest among men age 35 plus. Boxers are worn more by men under the age of 35.
"I prefer boxers because it gives me more room. But then again, it depends. I'll wear boxer briefs under dressy clothes but for casual wear, I'll wear regular boxers," said senior film major John Barnes.
Kevin Parker, a junior Arts and Science major, feels differently. "I prefer a snug fit. I do not like to feel like I am moving around too much. But my girlfriend prefers boxers."
About 60 percent of 18 to 34-year-old women surveyed said they have purchased men's underwear in the last year. A large majority have purchased boxers. The survey also shows that women buy what they feel looks pleasing to the eye but for many men, underwear is not "fashion apparel," it's a necessity.
Charlett Samuels, senior communications major, prefers how boxers look on a man. "Briefs are not sexy to me; it's really a turn off. They are what kids wear," Samuels said.
For those who desire more room to breathe without giving up scrotal support, the boxer brief might be just the thing. They are shaped like briefs around the pelvis with legs like boxers, just tight enough to provide support without strangulation. These boxer types are rapidly gaining in popularity.
Nick Snowden, a senior Arts and Sciences major, likes the balance of the two, "Yeah, that's what I wear, boxer briefs; just comfortable enough and most girls like them."
