We all saw Fantasia Barino on American Idol, often fumbling and having trouble expressing herself. She seemed uneasy or nervous, but we later recognized that she was having trouble with words. Fantasia has recently revealed in her new autobiography that she is illiterate. Her mother is also illiterate and Fantasia has a young daughter of her own who will eventually need Fantasia's help learning how to read. We weren't surprised because there are thousands of illiterate people, of all ages, living in America. Fantasia has stepped forth, being a role model for many fans and addressed a real issue. We hope she will inspire people and fans who have trouble reading to go out and make the step toward learning how to read.
Unfortunately, the book itself isn't getting the best reviews. We were shocked to know she was even putting one out since she is such a new artist. What would she really have to talk about that would be compelling? Despite the book reviews, we want to see her really use this book to make a difference. She should do a book tour with young kids and get them to understand that learning can be difficult at all ages. Another message she will send is despite obstacles you can make it to the top and you can be successful. After the success, it is time to go back and fill the voids in your life and patch up the problem areas.
If she makes a good profit from the book and we find out she hasn't learned to read we will truly be annoyed. Though it was dictated to someone and she knows the content, she can't even read her own book. It would be a shame for her to not be able to read the book to her daughter and comprehend. There is nothing more embarrassing than acknowledging a failure or weak point then doing nothing visible to improve. We have faith in Fantasia because she has a bright career ahead of her professionally and personally. Hopefully, her bravery in admitting her struggle will inspire people of all walks of life to pick up and try again.
